Leonardo DaVinci
The medium used through the careers of Messina and Bellini was still problematic in that it would darken the pigments with an amber tint. Leonardo Da Vinci discovered the solution to clarifying the medium through the use of a double boiler. This would regulate the temperature of the cooked ingredients, and therefore clarify the amber tint. Developing knowledge of how to properly compose a painting was at a peak through perspective, anatomical study, and the development of sfumato and chiaroscuro. Not to mention the developing ideas around aesthetics and the growing desire to represent nature. Artists were visual scientists as well as chemists, actively pursuing manners of representing the world around them. Da Vinci was a practitioner of creating a sense of light, and accurately representing form. From his clarified medium, to his use of sfumato and chiaroscuro, Da Vinci is an important link to the next step in the evolution of painting.
